Chanderi sarees are woven in Chanderi, a small historic town in Madhya Pradesh, and have been favoured by Indian royalty since the Mughal era. They are made from a delicate blend of silk and cotton — or pure silk — and are so fine they are almost translucent. Chanderi's hallmarks are its characteristic coin (ashrafi) buttis, floral motifs, and the distinctive shimmer created by the silk warp against the cotton weft.
