What is a Kanchipuram Saree?

Kanchipuram sarees — often called Kanjivaram sarees — are pure silk sarees handwoven in the temple city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Regarded as the queen of Indian sarees, they are prized for their extraordinary lustre, weight, and the intricate pure-zari (gold and silver thread) motifs woven directly into the silk. A single Kanchipuram saree can take anywhere from three days to three weeks to complete, depending on its complexity.

Origins: The Devanga Weavers of Kanchipuram

The weaving tradition in Kanchipuram is believed to be over 400 years old. Historical accounts suggest that the Devanga community of weavers migrated from Andhra Pradesh to the temple town of Kanchipuram during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire (14th–17th century). The weavers were patronised by the temples and royal courts, and they quickly became renowned for producing the finest silk fabric in South India.

The sarees were traditionally offered to deities in the famous Kamakshi Amman and Varadharaja Perumal temples, which is why the motifs on Kanchipuram sarees — peacocks, elephants, temple gopurams, and mango (paisley) — are deeply rooted in temple iconography.

What Makes a Kanchipuram Saree Authentic?

Three hallmarks distinguish a genuine Kanchipuram saree:

  • Pure mulberry silk — only silk sourced from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh is used, giving the fabric its characteristic stiff drape and natural sheen.
  • Zari woven separately into the body and border — unlike other sarees where the border is stitched on, the body and border of a Kanchipuram saree are woven independently and then interlocked using a technique called korvai. This is why the border is typically a contrasting colour.
  • Pure zari — traditional Kanchipuram sarees use zari made of real silver wire coated with gold. The GI tag (Geographical Indication) certifies authentic pieces.
